OSM's owner/director, Olenka Stasyshyn , emigrated from Ternopil, Ukraine to the U.S. in 1990. She settled in Maryland and set to work realizing a dream she had since she began studying music at the age of four: running her own music school.
Olenka began teaching piano lessons at the young age of 12 years old. As a graduate of Ukraine's Lviv Conservatory, Olenka began developing the cornerstone of her music philosophy: Teaching Music as a Language.
In 1993, Olenka purchased a piano situated in a shop window on Main Street in Historic Ellicott City, Maryland. Olenka sat in the window all day and played to passers-by. Within one month, Olenka had 120 new students, and thus, the Ellicott Square School of Music was born.
Over 25 years later, Olenka continues to teach and develop curriculum for her school, now renamed Olenka School of Music, with locations in Ellicott City and Columbia.
Olenka School of Music : Mission & Vision
MUSIC IMMERSION FOR INFANTS TO ADULTS
At Olenka School of Music and the Arts, we know everyone has the potential to be musical.
An OSM education extends beyond simply learning to play an instrument. Our fun, innovative and unique curriculum immerses students in the Universal Language of Music.
Our program fosters music fluency and creativity while enhancing proficiency and artistry. Over time, students develop organically into versatile musicians who innately comprehend, speak, read, compose and perform the Universal Language of Music.
Beginning with Music Together®, our infant to preschool program, students and grown-ups learn to express themselves musically through song, movement and rhythm play while experiencing a kaleidoscope of world cultures through music. OSM shares Music Together's® belief that everyone has the ability to sing in tune and keep a beat.
When students are ready for a more challenging curriculum, our Music ABCs and Music Foundations & Keyboards programs provides basic music building blocks for musicians as young as 3 years, and accompanying grown-ups, in a fast-paced, group setting. Lively games and activities introduce music notation and keyboard geography while strengthening understanding of rhythm play, and, most importantly, ear-training through Solfege instruction (better known as do-re-mi).
Class + Lesson Combo Program, our personalized combination of group and private instruction provides intermediate students the tools to develop advanced music fluency and build repertoire while fine-tuning technique with private vocal or instrumental lesson of choice.
Advanced-level students also have the opportunity of preparing for Trinity College of London Exams – an internationally recognized, college-level, standardized music assessment accepted as course credit at many accredited universities.
