The Woman Behind The Music (School)

Olenka, Olenka School of Music

OSM's owner/director, Olenka Stasyshyn, emigrated from Ternopil, Ukraine to the U.S. in 1990. She settled in Maryland and set to work realizing a dream she had since she began studying music at the age of four:

running her own music school.

Olenka began teaching piano lessons at the young age of 12 years old. As a graduate of Ukraine's Lviv Conservatory, Olenka began developing the cornerstone of her music philosophy: Teaching Music as a Language.

In 1993, Olenka purchased a piano situated in a shop window on Main Street in Historic Ellicott City, Maryland. Olenka sat in the window all day and played to passers-by.

Within one month, Olenka had 120 new students, and thus, the Ellicott Square School of Music was born.

Over 25 years later, Olenka continues to teach and develop curriculum for her school, now renamed Olenka School of Music, with locations in Ellicott City and Columbia.

“My five year old learned to read music a full year before he learned to read. OSMA's teachers are wonderful. We've been enrolling him for two years now. The teachers keep the kids moving and engaged, and learning so much. We love it here!”

— Christopher DuMont. (father)
