Caring teachers. Unique curricula. A progressive path.
With more than three decades serving Howard County, Ellicott City, and Columbia-area families, Olenka School of Music & the Arts gives students a place to begin, grow, and continue their musical education within one supportive school community.
Our philosophy is simple.
Music is not only something students perform. At OSM, students learn to understand it, use it, create with it, and make it part of their lives.
Teaching music as a language
Students build understanding step by step through listening, singing, reading, creating, playing, and performing.
Inspiring families to learn together
For younger students especially, shared participation helps music become a meaningful part of family life.
Building a progressive music pathway
Age-appropriate programs give students the next challenge when they are ready rather than leaving families to start over elsewhere.
Our method is unique.
OSM’s school and curricula are designed to make learning fun, exciting, and appropriately challenging. The goal is to help students develop musical skill while keeping the curiosity and creativity that make them want to continue learning.
More than a single class.
A trial gives your family a chance to experience the teaching style and environment before choosing the longer pathway that best fits the student’s age, goals, schedule, and level.
A glimpse inside the music-making.
Watch students and families experience the movement, interaction, instruments, creativity, and community that make OSM classes different from a standard lesson-only approach.

Olenka Stasyshyn
OSM owner and director Olenka Stasyshyn emigrated from Ternopil, Ukraine, to the United States in 1990. A graduate of the Lviv Conservatory, she developed the cornerstone of her teaching philosophy: Teaching Music as a Language.
In 1993, Olenka began building the school in Historic Ellicott City. What started with a piano and a vision became a long-standing Howard County music community serving children, adults, and families through group classes, private instruction, performances, and progressive music education.
